# What is Form W-9

Form W-9, known as **Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification**, is an IRS form used to verify a contractor’s identity and gather their _Tax Identification Number (TIN)_. You can use this form to provide your TIN to someone who needs to report payments to the IRS, such as:

*   Income paid to you
*   Mortgage interest you paid
*   Acquisition or abandonment of secured property
*   Cancellation of debt
*   Contributions you made to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)
